Learn to guide the machine by drawing lines on a piece of paper and sewing through the line with an unthreaded needle. Pin fabric pieces together with pins perpindicular to the seam line, and with the tip of the pin not crossing the seam line. Press seams according to the pattern instructions (open, up, or down), and press them well — nothing says homemade like seams that won’t lie flat.

Your first project needs to be something easy, and only requires you to sew a straight line. Try starting with a pillow. Most patterns that you buy in the store come with excellent directions on how to make something. As for using a sewing machine, most of them come with specific directions on how to thread the machine, how to thread a bobbin, where you plug in everything, and how to clean it (just some examples). But if you want hands on instruction, try looking in your local yellow pages for sewing machine stores (a few of the ones here sell vacuums as well as sewing machines). They offer classes for all levels of sewing, even beginner. You might have to pay a fee, though. But it could be worth it, depending on how much you want to get involved with it. Good luck!!
